Jack Bartholomew

Artist’s statement: I am compelled to find common elements among the humanities, sciences, and arts, and wish to engage others in this exploration.  Dance is the most-compelling way.  The defining structure is to be taken naïvely, without artifice.  Any complexity is emergent from simple rules, structures, or interactions. I define a piece with an architecture which gets instantiated in layers:  this gives a movement vocabulary, use of space, attending colors, music, and interactions. My dancemaking follows two strands.  The first develops games with collaborative elements.  In the other strand, we explore boundaries and transitions of phase as occur in regions of space, movement, time, music, or performer-audience.

Pieces performed publicly include Game 1.3 (August 2010 at Ailey Citigroup Theater as part of Dance N.Y. International), Game 2.2 (at the Choreographers’ Lab, Jacob’s Pillow, August 2010), Three, Two-by-Two, Two movements from Webern Op.5.

Training outside dance includes courses in theory, composition, ethnomusicology, computer music at the University of Michigan School of Music and conducting (Juilliard Evening Division).  Ph.D. in physics, University of Chicago.
